Mountain Homes Winter Getaways

The cold weather’s got you down. What to do? Decide to make it a sparkling memory by doing something wonderful for yourself and that special someone. Or maybe, just yourself. It may not be swimsuit weather, but there’s plenty of fun to be had if you know where to look. Here’s a handful of spots our writers love best.

For The Sociable Skier

Name: Linda Kramer

My Choice: Wintergreen Resort

Location: Central Virginia, southwest of Charlottesville and 90 miles from Richmond.

Description: An 11,000-acre, four-season resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Although best known for its spectacular skiing, Wintergreen also offers the year-round activities of tennis, rock climbing, fly-fishing, hiking, swimming, horseback riding and championship golf.

Distinction: Skiing opportunities for all levels of experience. Approximately 20 percent of the runs are beginner, 40 percent intermediate and 20 percent advanced. Wintergreen stands out not only for this diversity, but also for snowboarding, 13 lighted trails for night skiing and The Plunge, a 900-foot, 10-lane mega snow-tubing hill.

Reason Chosen: Looking for a new ski destination, a group of friends and I decided to give Wintergreen a try. We were especially intrigued by the number of challenging runs available.
